#Microsoft365 adds two-way calendar sync support on Outlook for Android

Organization: HCS COMPANY MICROSOFT SERVICES B.V.

Outlook for Android: two-way calendar sync support

MC221075

Major update: Announcement started

Applied To: All

We are making it possible for Outlook for Android users to synchronize the Outlook for Android calendar and a local device calendar database.

Key points

  • Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 63429
  • Timing: by the end of October
  • Roll-out: user level roll-out v tenant level
  • Control type: user control and admin control
  • Action: review and assess

[How this will affect your organization]

With this setting enabled at the tenant level, your users will be able to export calendars and events from an account in Outlook for Android to the local device calendar database. They can choose to view and edit these events from other calendar apps (e.g., Samsung Calendar or Google Calendar). When a user creates, edits, or deletes events from within their other calendar apps, the changes will be synced back to Outlook for Android.

[What you need to do to prepare]

If you choose to adjust the default settings, you can control the availability of calendar sync through Intune App Protection policies as well as control the default sync state of the feature through app configuration policies.

  1. This feature rolls out default On at the tenant level; calendar sync is allowed and can be enabled and used by your users. Admins who wish to block this behavior at the tenant level will need to deploy changes via Intune App Configuration Policies. With Intune App Protection Policies or App Configuration Policies, admins can control the availability of calendar sync for the work or school account, similar to how they currently manage contact sync.
  2. The calendar sync rolls out default Off at the user level; users must enable calendar sync to use this functionality. Admins can change this default sync behavior to be on automatically for the work or school account by using app configuration policies which are supported for delivery either through the mobile device management operating system channel for enrolled devices or through the App Protection Policy channel.

You may want to communicate to your Outlook for Android user that this capability will be rolling out should you not disable it.
