Major update: Announcement started

Applied To: All customers

The Microsoft Teams desktop app will be added to existing installations of Office 365 ProPlus on the Semi-Annual Channel on Jan 14, 2020, as announced in May (MC180551).

  • Beginning January 14, 2020, the Teams client will be added to existing installations for customers on the Semi-Annual Channel.
  • Teams will then auto-update on a regular cadence.

This message is associated with Office 365 Roadmap IDs 51452 and 56828.

[How does this affect me?]

Starting in July 2019, we began integrating Teams into Office 365 ProPlus to make it easier for organizations to adopt. That integration is now coming to our Semi-Annual Channel customers.

As part of the normal update process, the desktop Teams client will be installed by default on devices running Windows. There is no change to existing installations on Mac devices. This change does not affect users who already have Teams installed on their machines.

[What do I need to do to prepare for this change?]

If you do nothing, the Teams desktop client will be installed by default for your users when your tenant receives the semi-annual channel update.

If you don't want Teams to be added to existing installations of Office 365 ProPlus when you update to a newer version, disable the auto-update via a Group Policy or the Office Deployment Tool.

Alternatively, you can allow Teams to install and use a Group Policy to prevent Teams from automatically starting when users sign in to their device. To change this behavior, you must act before Teams is deployed.
